6TH ANNUAL CHQ GRAN FONDO

2020

The 2020 Chautauqua Gran Fondo was a mixed bag of unexpected surprises. During a year when almost every other outdoor event was cancelled due to the pandemic, we were able to pull off an amazing day of riding around our beloved Chautauqua Lake.

It did not come without challenges; travel bans in place prevented many of our friends from neighboring states and Canada from being able to join us; limits on the size of gatherings in place, businesses and organizations suffering that would normally love to be part of the day, and restrictions that, at times, seemed daunting.

However; the team rose to the challenge and managed to pull off a safe and enjoyable event. And … the participants happily complied to all of the safety protocols enacted to make the day possible. The 2020 event as a whole exceeded all expectations.

Some amazing folks stepped up and riders were delighted by the fun and well stocked aid stations hosted by our friends: Bemus Point Golf Club & Tap House, Hollyloft Ski & Bike, and Group Ther-Happy. The stops did not disappoint with an abundance of fruit, on course power supplements from our friends at Hammer Nutrition, ice cold water and Body Armor. And, let’s not forget the 2020 crowd favorite, pickles!

With no After Party allowed this year, it was only our 20-mile riders who enjoyed the experience of starting and finishing as always at Webb’s Captain’s Table. However, many participants stopped in at their leisure to enjoy a fine meal and a cocktail following the event.

The three beautiful routes did not change; still plenty of lake views and rolling hills for all three of the distance riders to enjoy. We remain hopeful that the Bemus Point/Stow Ferry will be back in action next year so we can add that fun experience back into the day.

Best of all, funds were raised to support the Chautauqua Region Music Alliance and The Creche of Jamestown, providing services to artists and families in our region.

We are so thankful for the group of volunteers and staff that came together to make the day memorable and safe for all. And we can’t thank the riders enough for being part of this great event.

Put a big star on August 21, 2021 on your calendar and don’t miss out on the fun next year. Stay safe, stay well and keep riding!
